- Annie

Most helpful was the structure of the program and practice tests. Also, breaking apart the questions as suggested and not overthinking it!

- Porschia

Informative, succinct, and most of all - effective! The test questions were very similar to the actual test. All in all a great preparation course. Thank you!

- Ramiyah

[What was most helpful was] active listening to the videos with an open mind, and the tests after the videos. This program was very helpful.

About the California LCSW Law and Ethics Exam

When do I take the California LCSW Law and Ethics Exam?

You take the California LCSW Law and Ethics Exam in your first year of registration as an Associate, after the completion of your graduate degree.

If you do not pass within that first year of associate registration, you must continue to attempt the exam at least once per one-year registration period until you pass.

How long is the California LCSW Law & Ethics Exam?

The California LCSW Law and Ethics Exam consists of 75 questions, of which 50 are scored. Unless you have accommodations allowing more time, you have 90 minutes to complete the test.

What is the passing score for the California LCSW Law & Ethics Exam?

The passing score cutoff varies by exam cycle and version, but is commonly around 35 out of 50 scored items (70%). Click here for more on passing scores for BBS exams.

How can I receive accommodations for the California LCSW Law & Ethics Exam?

Disability accommodations for the California LCSW Law & Ethics Exam are handled through the exam vendor, PearsonVUE. Accommodations for English as a Second Language (ESL accommodations) are handled through the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS).

What should I do if something goes wrong at the exam site?

While it is not common, on rare occasions exams will be impacted by power outages or other issues that result in inadequate or improper test administration. In such instances, it is important to have testing center staff file an Incident Report before you leave the building. This report makes it much more likely that PearsonVUE or the BBS will be able to take steps to rectify the situation.

When do I find out my test results for the California LCSW Law & Ethics Exam?

In most cases, results are provided at the testing facility immediately upon completion of your exam. Occasionally, results are not immediately available, in which case you should receive your results electronically through PearsonVUE, typically within 24 hours.

What happens after I pass the exam?

Once you pass the exam, the BBS is automatically notified of your test result (typically within 1-2 business days). If you have a registration renewal pending, the BBS receipt of your score will allow the renewal to process, if you have completed all other renewal requirements including payment.

What happens if I do not pass the exam?

If you do not pass, you must wait at least 90 days prior to your next exam attempt. You will then need to re-register for the exam. This is to ensure that no examinee receives the same version of the test twice.

This course does not offer continuing education (CE) credit.
