This course, alongside the courses Supervision of California BBS Associates and Supervision for Clinical Effectiveness, together meet the California BBS length and content requirements for 15 hours of supervision training for new California supervisors.
Course Information
This course is designed to familiarize new supervisors with important knowledge about California supervision relationships. It provides specific guidance on supervisor competencies, methods for building the supervision relationship, models of supervision, and resources available to supervisors. The course also reviews a number of frequently asked questions relevant to supervising clinicians on the pathway to California BBS licensure.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe at least six competencies necessary for effective clinical supervision
- Describe at least one area of supervision emphasis common in each of the following types of work settings: Private practice, public mental health, and agency settings.
- Describe at least two key concepts or techniques associated with each of at least three models of supervision
- List at least three resources that may be useful to the participant in a supervision role

Ben Caldwell, PsyD
Benjamin E. Caldwell, PsyD is a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Adjunct Faculty for California State University Northridge. He is the author of Basics of California Law for LMFTs, LPCCs, and LCSWs, and lead author of AAMFT’s Best Practices in the Online Practice of Couple and Family Therapy. He has published and presented around the country on issues related to law, ethics, technology, supervision, and professional development.
